Is it possible to pattern for the unexpected? More importantly is it possible to producce a businesss continuity plan which helps to ensure that our business survives an difficulty or natural calamity? In this article we at a straightforward way of thinking about planning that can help you to arrange suited for the unexpected.

Imagine you eat been tasked with producing a plan that ensures that your business survives a disaster. This is quiet a challenging proposition as there are myriad factors to take into accountt. Is there a best way to go about creating a plan? Many people basis a ground baased planning come nigh. With this way you would ally peculiar to predetermined scenarios that might round place – like a power neglect for example. Once you identify the sscenario you then identify what actions you need to take in ordder to mitigate the effects of the schema. This is a reasonable approach but is best way? What if you don’t identify the possible scenarios? Murphy’s law could depart over and convinced that the one scenario that you not method for is the whole that in actuality happens!

Can we defeat Murphy? There is a way of thinking that pleasure certainly with this. In the 80’s a number of information systems analysts like “Gane and Sarson ” developed a number of approaches to systems analysis and dessign. All of these approaches had everybody thing in customary. They emphasised the distiinction between the logical and concrete. The what and the how. For prototype lets say that you need to open a door. One fail to open it is to use the deal with, another would be to kick down (I’m not suggesting that you do this in normal practice), another way would be to use the window rather than the door and so . From this we can see that each what potentially many hows as the solution.

So can we use apply this approach to the devellopment of a business continuity layout? What we could do is that instead of looking at unique to predetermined scenarios we use sound what and how thinking. As a sooner step we coulld identify the tone resources, processes and procedures that incarcerate our businesses up and running. we have done that we can name what nneeds to hit on when these resources and processes stop working no matter how they stop working.

Lets look at model paragraph in unison more time. First put one’s finger on a critical resource (payroll information an example), then decide what needs to happen if that resource is not available no matter how it became unavailaable. How would we restore that data and how should we shield that text in the anything else take down a peg or two happen. The what is that matter is unavvailable. The how is not so important. The fact is that the data is . We now need focus we get it recoil from!

If you unite this thinking with ground based planning you may end up with a bbetter drawing has more scope to handle unexpected. In summary the plainpipe focus of this article is that distinguishing between WHAT and HOW can help you in your partnership planning.
